On the morning of July 4, 2024, two transgender female sex workers, G.K. and L.K., were subjected to a brutal physical attack—an act of violence and blatant discrimination. The incident, which occurred during their work in the early hours of the morning, underscores the ongoing human rights violations and pervasive discrimination faced by transgender individuals, particularly those engaged in sex work.
The transgender women were accompanied by other gay and lesbian sex workers, who were also subjected to violence while attempting to protect them. According to eyewitness accounts, the attack was carried out by a group of six young men who targeted the transgender workers based on their gender identity and employment circumstances. Earlier, the victims had contacted the “DiverCity” NGO, reporting repeated warnings from various young individuals to leave the area where people were being trafficked for sex work. The threats indicated that failure to comply would result in physical violence and even death.
It was reported that the attackers hurled transphobic and sexual insults before resorting to physical violence. The two victims tried to defend themselves and flee, but the attackers, in groups of three, assaulted each of the transgender individuals. They were beaten on the face, back, sides, torso, legs, arms, and head. The attackers also stole their personal belongings, including money and bags. The violence left both individuals with serious injuries, including bruises, pain throughout their bodies, and severe psychological trauma.
An ambulance and the police were called to the scene. The ambulance arrived over 40 minutes later but failed to provide first aid. Instead, the medical personnel exhibited discriminatory behavior and left without offering assistance. Similarly, the police neglected their duty to protect the victims and failed to take immediate action.
Following the incident, the victims sought support from the “DiverCity” NGO, where they received legal advice and social counseling. Accompanied by a lawyer from a partner organization, they later filed a report with the police. The case is currently under investigation.
One of the people who was attacked made the following post about the incident on his Instagram platform.
This heinous act underscores multiple layers of discrimination. Firstly, the attack reflects societal prejudice against individuals based on their sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE). Transgender individuals, especially those engaged in sex work, are often stigmatized and dehumanized, making them more vulnerable to violence and abuse. Secondly, the incident highlights the intersectional challenges faced by transgender sex workers, who are marginalized not only for their gender identity but also for their occupation, which is often criminalized or socially condemned in many societies.
The violence inflicted upon these two individuals constitutes a gross violation of their human rights, including the right to safety, dignity, and freedom from discrimination. International human rights treaties, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Yogyakarta Principles, emphasize the protection of all individuals, regardless of their SOGI. States are obligated to ensure the safety and equality of transgender individuals and to take concrete measures to prevent such acts of violence.
In this particular case, the lack of immediate intervention and support further illustrates systemic failures in protecting marginalized communities. It is imperative that authorities provide a thorough investigation into the attack, hold the perpetrators accountable, and provide the victims with the necessary medical, psychological, and legal support. Furthermore, governments and civil society organizations must work together to address the root causes of such violence through education, awareness campaigns, and the promotion of inclusive policies.
This incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need to combat discrimination and violence against transgender individuals and sex workers. It is essential to foster a society that respects and upholds the rights and dignity of every person, regardless of their gender identity or profession. The international community must stand in solidarity with the victims and demand justice, ensuring that such acts of hatred and violence are met with zero tolerance.
